Dr. Fredrick Mbogo
Senior Lecturer/Script Writer/ Playwright/Actor
Fredrick Mbogo, PhD, is a Senior Lecturer at The Technical University of Kenya’s Department of Music and Performing arts. He holds a Theatre Arts Degree from Moi University and has a Dramatic Arts Masters Degree from The University of The Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. His 2012 PhD thesis was based on Kenyan screen acting, with a bias towards dialogue in comedy in Vioja Mahakamani. He has taught in various capacities in Kenya for the last 15 years within the areas of Theatre and Film. He has also been a Playwright and Film Script writer and has staged several of his own plays in Kenya and South Africa. His plays have also been adapted for the stage in Uganda, Tanzania and Germany. His film scripts have been performed in an experimental fashion with productions under The Eldoret Film Festival and Lightbox Africa Limited of Nairobi. Mbogo is an Actor with accomplished stage and screen performances – he was part of the award winning cast of South Africa’s weekly drama titled Yizo Yizo which aired on South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and also on Kenya’s Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) 2004-2007. Currently, he is working in a project under Goethe Institute’s “Artisict Encounters” where he is to adapt Mukoma wa Ngugi’s novel Mrs. Shaw into a one-man performance with him as the performer. He also doubles up as The Sanaa Theatre Awards’ judging panel Chairman aiming to recognize good theatre work on Kenya’s Theatre spaces. He has been a reader with Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) evaluating literary texts, especially with drama and poetry for the form four Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education.
